How it works

From gross to net, in three steps

1

Remove the contributions

About 22% of gross for a non-manager, 25% for a manager: health, pension, CSG/CRDS. This gives the net before tax.

2

Apply the tax

Withholding tax removes income tax, based on your rate and tax parts.

3

Your net remains

The net after tax: the amount actually paid into your account each month.

Understanding gross to net in France

In France, the salary shown in a contract or job ad is always stated as gross (brut). To know what you actually receive, you subtract employee social contributions — around 22% for a non-manager and 25% for a manager (cadre) — then the withholding tax (prélèvement à la source) on income.

Three figures matter: the net before tax (gross minus contributions), the taxable net (the basis for income tax) and the net after tax — your real salary. Our calculator applies these steps automatically based on your status and household.

Since 1 June 2026, the French minimum wage (SMIC) is €12.31 gross per hour, i.e. €1,867 gross per month full-time, about €1,478 net. To go further, read the complete salary guide, the FAQ or the payslip glossary.
